2023 Trends In Healthcare: Personalized Healthcare

Top Trend: Personalized Healthcare

With 2022 drawing to a close, it’s important to look back on what was achieved and look forward to what can be done to help better the level of care patients are receiving in hospitals in 2023. According to Forbes Magazine, Personalized Healthcare will be one of the biggest trends for healthcare facilities going into 2023 (Marr, 2022).

Issues With Generalized Patient Care

Despite generalized patient care being the norm for decades, Personalized Healthcare will become the answer to facility improvements. These improvements can fall under Patient Safety, Satisfaction, and Experience concentrations across the continuum.

In data gathered by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), Patient Experience Scores in hospitals around the United States are at the same level they were at in 2016, showing almost no improvement over the past 6 years with Communication About Medicine and Care Transition ranking among the lowest in the results gathered (HCAHPS, 2022). Although the findings do not credit the lack of improvement in Patient Experience scores to any one source, generalized patient care could be part of the problem.

As a result of this, it can be concluded that treating every patient with identical medications/care routines isn’t effective. Every patient looking for treatment in 2023 is unique in why they are admitted into the hospital, their demographics (gender, age, religion & ethnicity), and how each patient will respond to certain treatments.

For example, the world’s best-selling drug, Humira, was reported to improve the condition of only 25% of those taking the medication (Mikulic, 2018). If patients were to be given the same treatment for their condition that was given to the previous patient before them, a large gap would eventually form between patients who received the correct treatment for their condition and patients who are still suffering after their visit to the hospital. The answer to ensuring that gap will never exist within any healthcare facility is undoubtedly Personalized Healthcare.

Personalized Healthcare’s Impact In Hospitals

Personalized Healthcare is the delivery of quality care specific to patient demographics, genetics, and risk factors. This level of care includes referencing medical history and taking past conditions and medications into consideration when treating patients. Although this approach can appear time-consuming, the growth and results Personalized Healthcare yields will prove to be worth it.

In 2022, personalized medical care was expected to contribute 40% of the predicted
$60 – $140 billion dollar growth of the personalized medicine therapeutics industry (Mikulic, 2018). Personalized Medical Care was projected to generate 24 – 56 billion dollars of growth within the last year alone.

Not only is this level of care growing quickly, but it’s also producing overwhelmingly positive results. Duke Health recently began a smoking cessation program that used personalized outreach to engage patients in the program. Through this implementation, Duke Health saw its success rate among enrollees 10x. Consequentially, they will now implement the same personalized approach for patients with back pain, overdue mammograms, and pre-op education (Sylvia, 2022).

Picking The Right Software For Implementation

However, finding software that will assist in this level of personalized care for patients is becoming harder each day. The market continues to become more saturated with products that fail to do as advertised. These products tend to view personalized care and patient engagement as an afterthought rather than the main priority as well. Sentact’s digital rounding software aims to create an environment of personalized healthcare in every hospital. Because of this, we seek to achieve these environments through the improvement of patient engagement, safety, and satisfaction.

Sentact’s comprehensive rounding platform has and will help hospitals achieve personalized patient care through our Best Practice Toolkit. Sentact’s Best Practice Toolkit features proven results to improve a facility’s HCAHPS. Additionally, these toolkits can be personalized for specific demographics and illnesses so hospitals can give care specific to their patients. For example, Partners have experienced a 12% increase in their patient experience scores.

Not only will Sentact’s Best Practice Toolkit help improve Patient Experience scores, but also capture meaningful data to improve patient visits now. Data recorded through rounding and post-discharge surveys will be stored and available to ensure that patients are receiving care specific to them during the rest of their stay and future visits.

Consequentially, these tools have been utilized for 20 years and helped improve patient care in over 850 facilities nationwide. In those 850+ facilities, Sentact’s digital rounding software assisted in facility wide improvements. This includes a 50% increase in positive patient feedback, 13% increase in patient satisfaction, and a 10% decrease in HAIs.

Additionally, Sentact utilizes an easy-to-use interface on desktop, mobile, Apple, and Android. Through whatever medium chosen, rounding surveys can be done on any device with ease, and data recorded through rounding surveys can be utilized whenever needed.

In 2023, the need for personalized healthcare will continue to grow with hospitals and healthcare facilities. Without the right software, hospitals will struggle with an overwhelming amount of data to record and analyze to efficiently provide this level of care to their patients.
