Rounding is a critical function in a healthcare environment and it occurs across multiple departments and impacts multiple disciplines. To increase the number of satisfied patients and improve the patient experience, Purposeful Rounding has proven effective.
Purposeful Rounding is defined as a “pro-active, systematic, nurse-driven, evidence-based intervention that helps anticipate and address patient needs.” Purposeful rounding addresses:
- Pain Level – Ask about a patient’s pain level and review the medication schedule
- Position – Adjust the patient’s position to avoid sores and additional pressures or pain
- Potty – Address the toileting needs of the patient
- Possessions – Ensure the patient has all of the necessary items available such as call lights, bed pans, water, tissues, etc.,
With each hourly round, nurses should address the 4P’s outlined above. While this may seem like an overwhelming task, most especially if completed using a manual process it can be a simple and an easy part of an everyday process if the right solution and right questions are included.
Using the solution isn’t enough. To truly impact patient satisfaction and the overall patient experience using purposeful rounding, clinicians and managers should review the data and make improvements where necessary. This includes addressing:
- Patient desires and expectations
- Promoting quality of care
- Improving transparent communication
- Recognizing caregivers
Adoption of the purposeful rounding process and the improvements that develop from the process will allow your healthcare organization to increase both employee and patient satisfaction as well as the overall organization HCAHPS scores.
